Arrière-petit-fils du Baal Shem Tov (fondateur du hassidisme) et petit-fils de Nachman de Horodenka, il fonda le mouvement hassidique de Breslov. Ses enseignements furent consignés par son principal disciple, Nathan Sternhartz (Reb Noson), qui rédigea le Likoutei Moharan et transcrivit les Sippourei Ma'asiyot (Contes). Son tombeau à Ouman est un lieu de pèlerinage majeur à Rosh Hashana.
