Né à Smorgon (aujourd'hui Smarhon, Biélorussie), il étudie à la yeshiva de Volozhin puis devient l'un des grands modernistes yiddish. Il enseigne la littérature yiddish à Vilna, s'installe à Minsk sous le régime soviétique. Arrêté durant les Grandes Purges en 1937, il est exécuté la même année, puis réhabilité en 1956.
