Born in Smorgon (today Smarhon, Belarus), he studied at the Volozhin yeshiva and became one of the great Yiddish modernists. He taught Yiddish literature in Vilna, settled in Minsk under the Soviet regime. Arrested during the Great Purges in 1937, he was executed the same year, then rehabilitated in 1956.
