Né à Prague, élève de Moïse Isserles et Salomon Luria (et de Mattithiah Delacrut en kabbale). Rabbin dans plusieurs grandes communautés d'Europe centrale et orientale. Auteur du Levush Malkhut, codification de la halakha en dix « vêtements » (levushim) intégrant coutumes, exégèse, philosophie et mystique, à laquelle il travailla près de 50 ans. Il est surnommé « le Levush » ou « Baal ha-Levushim » d'après cette œuvre.
