Né à Amsterdam dans une famille marrane d'origine portugaise, étudiant à la yeshiva Ets Ḥaïm, il devint l'un des grands kabbalistes et poètes juifs d'Italie. Rabbin à Venise (env. 1645–1673) puis à Mantoue jusqu'à sa mort, il annota l'ensemble du corpus lourianique et composa un lexique de noms divins ainsi que des drames en hébreu.
