Berlin philosopher, father of the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment). His Jerusalem (1783) defends freedom of conscience and the separation of Church and State. His translation of the Torah into German (in Hebrew characters) opened the Jews to European culture. Nicknamed the "Socrates of Berlin."
