Born in Sofia into a Sephardic Jewish family from Bulgaria, emigrated to Israel in 1948. Historian of Russia in the 18th–19th centuries, he founded in 1971 the Institute of Russian and East European Studies at Tel-Aviv University and holds the Samuel Rubin chair. Author of numerous works; recipient of the Israel Prize in 1993.
