Descendant d'une lignée de rabbins hassidiques (son père était rabbin de Medjybij), il devint l'une des voix majeures de la littérature hébraïque moderne. Journaliste et penseur nietzschéen appelant à une « transvaluation » du judaïsme, il fut aussi un grand collecteur de légendes et de contes juifs. Il signa Bin-Gorion à partir de 1914.
