Célèbre rebbe hassidique, l'un des cinq principaux disciples-diffuseurs d'Elimelech de Lizhensk en Pologne et Galicie. Ses enseignements de Torah furent recueillis par ses élèves (notamment R. Yehezkel Paneth) et publiés à titre posthume. Il est resté célèbre pour son opposition aux campagnes napoléoniennes.
