Gaon of Pumbedita from 858 to 860, probably elected more by virtue of his father's merits than his own. He had as rival the gaon Mar Mattithia ben Rabbi, who surpassed him in Talmudic learning, and the dissensions between them ceased only at Menahem's death.

Gaon de Poumbedita 858-860. Il fut probablement élu à la charge de gaon plutôt en raison de son père que pour ses propres mérites. Il avait un rival dans le gaon Mar Mattithiah b. Rabbi, qui le surpassait en érudition talmudique, et entre lequel et Menahem des dissensions continuèrent jusqu'à la mort de ce dernier.
