Né à Mezőkövesd (Hongrie) en 1925, il étudie la philosophie et les langues sémitiques à Budapest, immigre en Israël en 1947 et poursuit à l'Université hébraïque. Professeur à Bar-Ilan à partir de 1961 (professeur titulaire en 1970), doyen puis recteur (1971-1974). Ses domaines : araméen, syntaxe hébraïque, hébreu biblique, rabbinique et surtout moderne.
