Menachem Mendel Morgenstern, the "Kotzker Rebbe," disciple of Rabbi Bunim of Pshiskha whom he succeeded, founded the Hasidic school of Kotsk, renowned for its radical demand for truth, intellectual rigor, and rejection of superficial piety. From 1839 onward, he lived in seclusion during the last twenty years of his life.
