Son of Victoria and Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim (Chief Sephardic Rabbi of Israel, Rishon le-Tzion 1955-1972), he was one of the most prolific researchers of Jewish studies. Pillar and then director (1964) of the Ben-Zvi Institute, pioneer in the use of Hebrew manuscripts for the study of Sephardic, Italian and Oriental Judaisms of the early modern period. Founder, with Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, of the journal Sefunot; he later directed the Institute Yad ha-Rav Nissim (from 1985), in memory of his father.
