Medini, Ḥayyim Hezekiah

Palestinian rabbinic author, born in Jerusalem in 1833, son of Rabbi Raphaël Éliahou Medini. After receiving his rabbinical diploma in his native city, he sits on the rabbinical court of Constantinople, then becomes in 1866 chief rabbi of Kara-Sou-Bazar, in Crimea, before returning to Palestine in 1889 and settling in Hebron in 1891, where he has been serving since as interim chief rabbi. He is the author of the « Miktab le-Ḥizḳiyahu » (Smyrna, 1865) and especially the « Sede Ḥemed », a vast legal encyclopedia of which twelve volumes have been published since 1890.

Écrivain rabbinique palestinien ; né à Jérusalem en 1833 ; fils du Rabbi Raphael Eliahu Medini. À l'âge de dix-neuf ans, après avoir terminé ses études dans sa ville natale, il reçut le diplôme rabbinique. Il se rendit alors à Constantinople, où pendant treize ans il fut membre d'une cour rabbinique. En 1866, il fut appelé comme grand-rabbin à Kara-Su-Bazar en Crimée. En 1889, Medini revint en Palestine, séjournant d'abord à Jérusalem, et allant en 1891 à Hébron, où il exerce depuis la fonction de grand-rabbin.

Les œuvres de Medini comprennent : « Miktab le-Ḥizḳiyahu » (Smyrne, 1865), études talmudiques et responsa ; « Or Li » (_ib._ 1874), responsa ; « Paḳḳu'ot Sadeh » (Jérusalem, 1900) ; « Sede Ḥemed », son chef-d'œuvre, une collection encyclopédique de lois et de décisions en ordre alphabétique, dont douze volumes ont paru depuis 1890 (Varsovie).
