Senator, author and Italian painter, born in Mantua in 1826. After studying law in Pavia, he took part in the Italian revolution of 1848, before exiling himself to Frankfurt then Paris and Switzerland, and sitting in Parliament in Milan (1860-67). Recognized painter, he also popularized Heine's work in Italy through an essay (1857) and translations, and chaired in 1878 the international art jury of the Paris Exposition.

MASSARANI, TULLO

Sénateur italien, auteur et peintre; né à Mantoue en 1826. Il étudia le droit à Pavie et prit une part active à la révolution italienne de 1848, après l'échec de laquelle il s'enfuit à Francfort-sur-le-Main. De Paris, il se rendit en Suisse, et peu après à Milan, où il devint membre du Parlement (1860-67), et fut ensuite très efficace comme membre du conseil municipal. Il est bien connu en Italie comme peintre, sa peinture la plus célèbre étant « Les Thermes chauds d'Alexandrie ». Son essai sur Heine dans « Creposcolo » (1857) et sa traduction des œuvres de ce dernier ont rendu Heine très populaire en Italie. Massarani fut président du jury international de l'art à l'Exposition de Paris de 1878. Il est membre de l'Institut lombard des Arts et des Sciences, de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts, et membre honoraire de l'Académie de San Luca.
