Born on July 30, 1892 in Borne, son of a wealthy textile manufacturer (the Jewish industrial family Spanjaard of Borne), he pursued a career as conductor and composer in the Netherlands. Barred from the stage under Nazi occupation because of his Jewish origin, he was deported and died at Auschwitz (present in the database of Auschwitz detainees).
