Markovics Gyula, né le 22 janvier 1926 à Sátoraljaújhely (nord-est de la Hongrie), est mort début août 2026 dans sa cent-unième année ; la presse régionale le désignait comme le dernier survivant de la Shoah des communautés juives de Sátoraljaújhely et de Nyíregyháza. Déporté à Auschwitz-Birkenau à dix-huit ans en 1944, il survit aux marches de la mort avant d'être libéré en janvier 1945. De retour en Hongrie, il exerce le métier d'horloger-joaillier puis dirige l'atelier d'horlogerie de l'entreprise VAGÉP à Nyíregyháza jusqu'à sa retraite, restant jusqu'à sa mort une figure respectée de la communauté juive locale.
