Soviet Jewish mathematician, one of the great figures of the Soviet school of functional analysis. In the 1930s he created a functional analysis center at Odessa University. His career was hampered by antisemitic discrimination (loss of a position in 1952). Recipient of the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1982, which he was not permitted to receive in person. He has an entry in the YIVO encyclopedia.
