Né à Venise le 31 mai 1878, mort à Bologne le 28 août 1946. Neurophysiologiste réputé, il travailla avec Charles Scott Sherrington à Liverpool et obtint la chaire de physiologie à l'Université de Bologne en 1936. En 1938, né dans une famille de religion juive (« famiglia di religione ebraica »), il fut radié comme juif de l'Université de Bologne et de l'Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei en application des lois raciales fascistes ; il s'était auparavant converti au catholicisme.
