Born in Venice on 31 May 1878, died in Bologna on 28 August 1946. Renowned neurophysiologist, he worked with Charles Scott Sherrington in Liverpool and obtained the chair of physiology at the University of Bologna in 1936. In 1938, born into a family of Jewish religion (« famiglia di religione ebraica »), he was struck from the University of Bologna and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei as a Jew in application of fascist racial laws; he had previously converted to Catholicism.
