Marģers Vestermanis, né le 18 septembre 1925 à Riga dans une famille juive lettone germanophone, est mort le 30 juillet 2026 à Riga à l'âge de cent ans. Rescapé du ghetto de Riga, des camps de Kaiserwald, Dondangen et Poperwahlen, il s'évade lors d'une marche de la mort en juillet 1944 et rejoint la résistance dans les forêts lettones, étant le seul membre de sa famille à survivre à la Shoah. Devenu historien, il fonde en 1989 le musée « Les Juifs en Lettonie » (Ebreji Latvijā), première institution dédiée à l'histoire juive en Lettonie depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale, dont il fut le directeur jusqu'en 2008.
