Envoyé en 1866 pour reconstituer la communauté juive de Bologne, dissoute depuis 1593. Sous sa direction la communauté rétablie bâtit synagogue et cimetière. Il a laissé une « Autobiographie d'un rabbin italien » (rééditée en 1986) et des lettres documentant le judaïsme italien du XIXᵉ s.
