Né Manoel Dias Soeiro dans une famille de marranes portugais, il fonda en 1626 la première imprimerie hébraïque d'Amsterdam. Rabbin et polygraphe, il correspondit avec les savants chrétiens de son temps et négocia auprès d'Oliver Cromwell la réadmission des Juifs en Angleterre (1655–1656).
