Né à Berlin en 1863 dans une famille juive établie, il devint un égyptologue de premier plan, fondateur et directeur de l'Institut archéologique allemand du Caire. Il est surtout connu pour la découverte du buste de Néfertiti à Amarna. Contraint de quitter ses fonctions en 1933 après l'arrivée des nazis au pouvoir, il s'exila à Paris.
