Born in Berlin in 1863 into an established Jewish family, he became a leading Egyptologist, founder and director of the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo. He is best known for the discovery of the bust of Nefertiti at Amarna. Forced to leave his position in 1933 after the Nazi rise to power, he went into exile in Paris.
