Mathematician from a Jewish family (son of Max Berwald, bookseller in East Prussia, and Friedericke Fischel). Professor at the German University of Prague, pioneer of Finsler geometry (the « Berwald spaces » bear his name); author of 54 articles. Deported by the Nazis to the Łódź Ghetto, where he and his wife Hedwig died in 1942.
