German rabbi and author, born on August 24, 1814 in Hotzenplotz, Austrian Silesia, and died in Beuthen on November 20, 1864, trained in several yeshivot and then with Wolf Löw in Nagy Tapolcsány before completing his rabbinical education in Lemberg and Brody. Settled for a time as a merchant in Bielsko, he was appointed in 1846 district rabbi of Wadowice, with seat in Oświęcim, then elected in 1854 rabbi of Beuthen, a position he held until his death. He is the author of the Biḳḳoret ha-Talmud, a critical talmudic lexicon published in Vienna in 1863.

Rabbin allemand et auteur ; né à Hotzenplotz, Silésie autrichienne, 24 août 1814 ; mort à Beuthen, 20 novembre 1864. Après avoir fréquenté diverses yeshibot dans son pays natal, il devint l'élève de Wolf Löw à Nagy Tapolcsany, et, s'inclinant ensuite vers le Ḥasidisme, il se rendit successivement à Lemberg et à Brody afin de poursuivre son éducation rabbinique. Il se rendit finalement à Berlin, où il acquit quelque formation laïque. Après avoir obtenu non sans grandes difficultés une licence de mariage, il s'établit comme homme d'affaires à Bielitz, et en 1846 fut nommé rabbin de district de Wadowice, avec siège à Oswiecin (Auschwitz). En 1854, il fut élu rabbin de Beuthen, position qu'il conserva jusqu'à sa mort.

Löwy fut l'auteur de « Biḳḳoret ha-Talmud: Kritisch-Talmudisches Lexikon » (vol. i., Vienne, 1863), contenant 150 articles pour une encyclopédie talmudique proposée.
