Fils aîné d'une famille juive musicienne (Jacques Tas et Frieda Herzberg), il fut l'un des premiers psychanalystes professionnels des Pays-Bas. Déporté à Westerbork puis Bergen-Belsen, il y tient un journal (25 avril 1944 – 7 avril 1945) publié après-guerre sous le pseudonyme « Loden Vogel ». Il se spécialise ensuite dans le trauma et la honte.
