Eldest son of deputy Léopold Javal, he specialized in ophthalmology to attempt to cure his sister's strabismus. In 1878 he opened a laboratory of ophthalmology at the Sorbonne which he directed until 1900. Pioneer in the study of eye movements during reading (saccades). Becoming blind at the end of his life, he continued to publish on reading.
