German folklorist born in Namslau, Silesia, on March 13, 1812, died in Saint-Hubert on August 3, 1890. Trained in philology at the universities of Breslau, Munich and Berlin, he became in 1849 professor of German language at the Royal Athenaeum in Liège, a position he left to retire in 1867. He translated the "Pentamerone" of Basile with an introduction by Jakob Grimm (Berlin, 1846), "Baarlam und Josaphat" by John of Damascus (Münster, 1847) and the "Otia Imperialia" of Gervais of Tilbury (Hanover, 1856), and published a collection of essays, "Zur Volkskunde" (Heilbronn, 1879).

Folkloriste allemand ; né à Namslau, Silésie, le 13 mars 1812 ; mort à Saint-Hubert le 3 août 1890. Il étudia la philologie aux universités de Breslau, Munich et Berlin, et devint en 1849 professeur de langue allemande à l'Athénée Royal de Liège, Belgique. Il abandonna sa chaire et se retira dans la vie privée en 1867. Les traductions suivantes de sa main peuvent être mentionnées : Giambattista Basiles, "Pentamerone," avec introduction de Jakob Grimm (Berlin, 1846) ; Johannes Damascenus, "Baarlam und Josaphat" (Münster, 1847) ; Dunlop, "Gesch. der Prosadichtung" (Berlin, 1851) ; une édition des "Otia Imperialia" de Gervais de Tilbury (Hanover, 1856). Un recueil d'essais originaux de lui fut publié à Heilbronn en 1879, sous le titre "Zur Volkskunde."
