Leopold Sonnemann

Born in 1831 in Höchberg (Bavaria) into a Jewish family of cloth merchants, which he transformed into a banking house. He founded and directed the Frankfurter Zeitung in Frankfurt (established under this title in 1866), one of the great liberal German daily newspapers. He sat in the Reichstag (1871-1876 and 1878-1884) for the Deutsche Volkspartei and on the municipal council of Frankfurt. The newspaper remained a liberal organ until its closure ordered by Hitler in 1943.

Journaliste allemand ; né à Höchberg, en Basse-Franconie, le 29 octobre 1831. Après avoir acquis une fortune considérable en tant que marchand, il fonda en 1856 la « Frankfurter Zeitung », un journal publié à Francfort-sur-le-Main ; il occupa bientôt une position éminente en Allemagne du Sud, notamment dans le monde commercial. Depuis 1867, Sonnemann en est le seul propriétaire et rédacteur en chef.

De 1871 à 1876 et de 1878 à 1884, Sonnemann fut délégué au Reichstag allemand, comme membre du Parti populaire (Volkspartei), pour lequel son journal a toujours été un organe représentatif. À sa première élection (1871), il battit le baron Rothschild ; à la seconde (1874), Lasker. En 1884, il fut battu par le Parti ouvrier social-démocrate.

Sonnemann est actuellement (1905) un membre éminent du conseil aldermanique de Francfort-sur-le-Main.
