American economist of Polish Jewish origin (family fleeing Poland during the First World War). Law degree from the University of Warsaw (1938), he emigrated to the United States. Pioneer of mechanism design theory (concept of « incentive compatibility »); he shared the 2007 Nobel Prize in Economics with Maskin and Myerson, one of the oldest laureates (90 years old).
