Écrivain et dramaturge français né à Marseille, fils de Jacob (Salomon) Gozlan, juif séfarade né à Alger et l'un des fondateurs de la première communauté juive organisée de Marseille (1783). Journaliste puis auteur prolifique, proche de Balzac dont il fut le secrétaire ; il lui succéda à la présidence de la Société des gens de lettres. Célèbre notamment pour « Balzac en pantoufles » (1856).
