French philosopher specializing in epistemology and the history of philosophy. Professor at the Sorbonne for thirty years, he succeeded Lucien Lévy-Bruhl in the chair of the history of modern philosophy (1927) and co-founded the Revue de métaphysique et de morale in 1893. Forced to leave his position during the Occupation because of his Jewish origins, he took refuge in the Free Zone and died in 1944 in Aix-les-Bains.
