Born in Paris to a Jewish family of Alsatian origin with a strong scientific culture (his great-uncle was mathematician Jacques Hadamard, his father-in-law Paul Lévy, his uncle the pediatrician Robert Debré). First French Fields medalist (1950) for his theory of distributions, which revolutionized analysis. Professor at École polytechnique, he was also an anticolonial activist.
