Né à Marosvásárhely (Târgu Mureș) en 1929 dans une famille juive de Transylvanie, il fut déporté en 1944 (sa mère et sa sœur périrent à Auschwitz) et survécut. Devenu photojournaliste, il consacra une part majeure de son œuvre à photographier et documenter les anciens cimetières juifs et la mémoire juive de Transylvanie. Il s'installa en Hongrie en 1988 et mourut à Budapest en 2020.
