Member of a Jewish family from present-day Ukraine, he was a pedagogue and Yiddish scholar. He contributed regularly (1910-1912) to the journal of the Society for the Diffusion of Enlightenment among the Jews of Russia, with articles on the "Judeo-German dialect, its essence and significance," and co-wrote a Yiddish manual, "Di naye shul" ("The New School"), with Dmitri Hochberg.
