German-Jewish architect born in Frankfurt an der Oder. He designed the country house of Albert Einstein in Caputh. Emigrated to the United States in 1941 to flee the Nazis (his mother, a brother and a sister were murdered in a camp near Riga), he developed with Walter Gropius the « Packaged House System / General Panel System ». Professor at the IIT then at USC.
