Born in Frankfurt into a Jewish family established in the city since the 16th century. Astronomer and physicist, director of the Potsdam observatory. Engaged during the First World War, he produces on the Russian front (late 1915) the first exact solution of Einstein's field equations, communicated to Einstein in December 1915. Died in 1916.
