Né à Francfort dans une famille juive implantée dans la ville depuis le XVIe siècle. Astronome et physicien, directeur de l'observatoire de Potsdam. Engagé pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il produit sur le front russe (fin 1915) la première solution exacte des équations de champ d'Einstein, communiquée à Einstein en décembre 1915. Mort en 1916.
