Né à Sarajevo dans « l'une des plus anciennes familles séfarades de Bosnie-Herzégovine ». Docteur de l'université de Vienne, spécialiste du judéo-espagnol (ladino) et de la littérature hispanique. Il recueillit et étudia les formes linguistiques et les romances judéo-espagnoles de Bosnie, Priština et Skopje. Déporté, il mourut au camp de Bergen-Belsen en 1945.
