Born around 1937 in a Jewish family of Łódź, as a child he knew the Łódź ghetto and then the camps of Ravensbrück and Sachsenhausen; his mother was murdered in the Holocaust, his father survived. Settled in East Berlin, he became one of the great German-language writers and a dissident. His novel Jakob der Lügner (1969) is a major work of Holocaust literature, adapted for film (the only East German production nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film).
