Auteur allemand ; né à Hoya, Hanovre, le 21 juin 1861. Il a reçu son éducation à l'école industrielle Dorotheenstadt, au gymnase Friedrich Werder et à l'Université de Munich, où il a obtenu son doctorat en 1888. Il est l'auteur de « Christian Wernicke », 1888, et a édité les ouvrages suivants : « Briefe der Elisabeth Charlotte », 1889 ; « Johann Gottlieb Regis' 'Fragmente einer Shakespeareübersetzung' », 1893 ; et, avec G. Brandes et P. Schlenther, les œuvres complètes d'Ibsen.

Depuis 1891, Elias est rédacteur en chef des « Jahresberichte für Neuere Deutsche Litteraturgeschichte ».
