Born in Berlin in 1923 to Jewish parents, he fled Nazi Germany in 1936. Professor of computer science at MIT, he created ELIZA in 1966, one of the first conversational agents. He later became a major critic of AI, expounding his thought in the work Computer Power and Human Reason (1976).
