Né à Berlin en 1923 de parents juifs, il fuit l'Allemagne nazie en 1936. Professeur d'informatique au MIT, il créa en 1966 ELIZA, l'un des premiers agents conversationnels. Devenu critique majeur de l'IA, il exposa sa pensée dans l'ouvrage Computer Power and Human Reason (1976).
