Merchant, resistance fighter (partisan), then scholar, regarded as the principal Jewish intellectual of Greece after the Second World War. President of the Jewish Council of Ioannina (1945) and secretary of the community (1947). Pioneer of research on the language, culture, and traditions of Romaniote Jews and Judeo-Greek. He published "Yannióti ka Evraïka Tragoudia" (Jewish Songs of Ioannina, 1953, 16 hymns from manuscripts of 1853–1870) and "Ta Onomata ton Evraion sta Ioannina" (The Names of the Jews of Ioannina, 1955); he studied Judeo-Greek kinot and piyyutim (including elegies from Corfu dating to the thirteenth century).
