Joseph Ezekiel Rajpurkar (1834-1905), issu d'une famille Bene Israel de Bombay, fut formé à l'hébreu et à l'anglais par John Wilson. Directeur de la David Sassoon Benevolent Institution pendant quarante ans, examinateur d'hébreu (1871) puis fellow (1879) de l'université de Bombay, il traduisit plus de vingt ouvrages de la liturgie hébraïque (siddour, mahzor, piyyoutim, selihot) en marathi et rédigea des exposés sur la littérature rabbinique et l'histoire juive.
