Sa famille est une famille de conversos ; sa sœur Maria fut arrêtée par l'Inquisition en 1666 pour « avoir conservé des coutumes juives » puis déportée au Brésil. Il rédigea en 1668 un recueil pharmaceutique manuscrit richement illustré.
