Author of the Shulhan Arukh (Set Table, 1565), the code of Jewish law that remains the universal halakhic reference. Born in Spain, exiled to Portugal and then Turkey, he settled in Safed in Galilee, which became the center of Jewish mysticism in the sixteenth century.
