Coming to Erets-Israël as a child from Ukraine, he was an interpreter in the Turkish army during the First World War, then a Hebrew teacher and explorer of Transjordan and the Negev. From 1938 he taught at the teachers' seminary in Tel-Aviv. His major work is « Ha-Yadata et ha-Aretz? » (Do You Know the Land?), a six-volume description of the regions of Israel.
