Né à Kamenets (Ukraine), installé en Erets-Israël en 1906, il fut en 1910 l'un des fondateurs de la première kvoutza, Degania Alef, berceau du mouvement des kibboutzim. Il raconte cette fondation dans un livre traduit en une douzaine de langues.
