Émile Jonas, French musician, was born in Paris on March 5, 1827. Entered the Conservatory in 1841, he obtained there the first prize in harmony in 1847 and the Grand Prix de Rome in 1848, before devoting himself mainly to the composition of comic operettas in the style of Offenbach, such as Le Duel de Benjamin (1855) or Javotte (1871), later given in London under the title Cinderella. Professor of solfège at the Conservatory from 1847 to 1866, he was also musical director of the Portuguese synagogue in Paris and published a Collection of Hebrew Songs (1854).

Musicien français ; né à Paris le 5 mars 1827. Il entra au Conservatoire en 1841, où il obtint le premier prix d'harmonie en 1847 et le Grand Prix de Rome en 1848. Deux ouvertures de sa composition furent jouées au Conservatoire en 1851 et 1852 respectivement. Il se consacra ensuite principalement à la composition d'opérettes comiques dans le style d'Offenbach, ses principales productions étant : « Le Duel de Benjamin » (Bouffes Parisiens, 1855) ; « La Parade » (1856) ; « Le Roi Boit » et « Les Petits Prodiges » (1857) ; « Job et Son Chien » (1863) ; « Avant la Noce » (1865) ; « Deux Arlequins » (1865) ; « Le Canard à Trois Becs » (1869) ; « Javotte » (1871 ; représentée plus tard à Londres sous le titre de « Cinderella ») ; « Le Premier Baiser » (1883).

De 1847 à 1866, Jonas fut professeur de solfège au Conservatoire, où il conduisit également une classe d'harmonie pour les élèves de musique militaire. Il fut directeur musical de la synagogue portugaise de Paris, et a publié un ouvrage intitulé « Recueil de Chants Hebraïques » (1854).
