Né à Königsberg dans une famille juive (fils de Nathan Rosenhain et Röschen Joseph), élève de Carl Jacobi à l'université de Königsberg. Il introduisit les caractéristiques thêta et les seize fonctions thêta à deux variables ; sa thèse (dirigée par Jacobi) portait sur les fonctions périodiques à deux variables, et il édita pour publication les cours de Jacobi.
