Czech writer of Jewish origin born in Bohemia in 1900. Doctor of Comparative Literature and Slavic Philology (University of Prague, 1928). He escaped deportation by feigning his death and living in hiding. After the war, he worked at the Jewish Museum in Prague and contributed to the history of the Jews of Bohemia. His novels "Život s hvězdou" (Life with a Star, 1949) and "Na střeše je Mendelssohn" (Mendelssohn on the Roof) are among the first Czech works on the Shoah.
