Born Józef Nikodem Lewinkopf in 1933 in Poland, in a Jewish family. He survived the Shoah hidden by Polish villagers and emigrated to the United States in 1957. Author of the novels The Painted Bird (1965) and Being There (1971), twice president of the American chapter of the PEN Club. Died in 1991.
