Né Józef Nikodem Lewinkopf en 1933 en Pologne, dans une famille juive. Il survit à la Shoah caché par des villageois polonais et émigre aux États-Unis en 1957. Auteur des romans The Painted Bird (1965) et Being There (1971), deux fois président du chapitre américain du PEN Club. Décédé en 1991.
